Shade grown coffee refers to coffee that is grown under either a canopy of trees or the shade of other natural objects or plant life. Coffee has historically been grown in this manner, and only recently have advancements in science allowed for coffee to be grown in the sun without being damaged or burned. While the advantages in shade grown coffee seem plentiful and clear, the challenges farmers are forced to overcome to produce the crop remain stiff. Hopefully, with time, a middle ground can be found that provides consumers with shade grown coffee options, and farmers with a justification to continue producing their crop.
